The food and beverage processing sector is Ontario’s largest manufacturing employer, with more than 125,000 people currently working at more than 3,000 businesses across the province.
Yet a recent survey by Food and Beverage Ontario revealed that two-thirds of employers in the sector expressed difficulty finding qualified candidates trained in food safety, business, agriculture, food science and technology.
With the sector’s goal to create 60,000 new jobs by the year 2020, here are three food programs that will help you land a coveted job in this growing industry.
Bachelor of Science in Agriculture
At this program offered by the University of Guelph, students can gain hands-on experience through international field trips to agri-businesses and farms in Costa Rica or by taking a crop tour through the Midwestern United States. It’s ideal for careers in teaching, consulting, communications, production, marketing, finance, policy and regulatory affairs.
Food Safety and Quality Assurance – food processing
This two-semester full-time graduate certificate program at Conestoga College is perfect for students with a degree or diploma in science, food or engineering. It furthers their knowledge to prepare them for a career in the food processing industry in the area of food safety.
Food Science Technology
This Centennial College post-secondary advanced diploma program provides training in the three fundamental disciplines of biology, chemistry and food science. Students will examine the many processes that food undergoes on the journey from field to fork.
