Using skills that have developed over thousands of years a winemaker’s job requires dedication passion and a thirst for quality. Also known as an enologist or vintner, a winemaker will take part in many different elements of the creation of wine, from grape growing, harvesting and crushing, to fermentation, ageing, bottling, and product marketing.

A good nose and palette definitely helps too—a winemaker must use hands-on experience and science to determine the right amounts of acid, sugar, sulphur and sulphites within a wine. Rewarding and demanding, a winemaker’s work requires technical expertise, excellent planning and management skills, adaptability, and real dedication.
